January through June UpdatesAll the news that fit to post about Yukon runners.May 18, 1999 SPORTSLODGE RIVERBANK FUN RUN Well the running season is underway and how do we know this? because ..... over 50 people showed up at F.H. Collins for the 1st fun run of the season. Judging by the times it looks like a lot of people have been runing through the winter. Old guy Bill Parry was the first across the line in 17:47. He was followed by Shane Carlos and Kevin Macdonald.Tamara Goeppell was 7th to cross the line and the first woman as she slipped well under the 20 min. barrier with a time of 19:15. Denise Lucas was the next woman to finish in a great time of 20:37. Click here for complete results. May 9, 1999 RUN FOR MOM "Incredible!", that's about the only word that can describe the gathering that took place in the parking lot of the Whitehorse General Hospital, on Sunday, May 9, 1999. Well over a thousand (1000) walkers, joggers, runners, bicyclists, roller bladers, baby strollers etc. turned up to support a fund raising event to purchase a new mammography unit for the hospital. After months of planning by a talented and caring group of volunteers (the list is too long to try and mention them all) the 1st Annual RUN FOR MOM exceeded everyone's wildest dreams. To top it all off, after weeks of less than ideal weather, Sunday morning dawned with a cloudless sky and soaring temperatures - the proverbial icing on the cake.
May 2, 1999 Vancouver International Marathon and Half Marathon Continuing a tradition that started in January with Yukoners going to prestigious events, eight folks from Whitehorse turned up in Vancouver this weekend and covered either the full marathon or did the half. The marathon was won by Atsunari Saito from Japan in 2:21:33. On his heels were 3,322 other runners. Leading the charge for the Yukon was Joanne Van Bibber. Running a fine time of 4:10:34, Joanne was 1,839th overall and 67th out of 190 women in the 40 to 44 age group. Others running were Christine Smith, Sue Lucas, Gord Holmes and Corey Roussell. The half-marathon also had a large field of 3,145, which was topped by Oliver Utting of Vancouver in 1:10:10. The fastest Yukoner was Murray Leitch in 1:58:11. Murray was 1,244 overall and 98th out of 157 in the 40 to 44 age group. The large field also included Diane Bruce and Carmen Zawyrucha from Whitehorse. For their complete results click here. April 19, 1999 Boston Marathon We don't have much in the way of details but we do know that Denise Lucas of Whitehorse ran this years Boston Marathon in 3:33:55. This is a great time and outstanding performance. Denise ran her qualifying time last year at the Fast As Hell Marathon held at the Hot Springs. One of our favorite marathoners, Rob McWilliam, ran his umpteenth 26+ miler in a solid time of 3:44:47. Congratulations to both Whitehorse runners. April 16, 1999 Law Day Run Over three hundred runners and joggers turned out for the first run of the season - a new record! More importantly this run marked a significant change of the running status quo. A group of young men came of age and dominated the event. The "old timers" where left wondering what happened and where last seen heading back to the drawing board. Kevin Macdonald set a blistering pace from the start, and by half way had pretty much run the legs off of his nearest competitor. He cruised first across the finish line with his nearest competitor some 30 sec. adrift. If there was one person who gave the old timers something to cheer about, it was 40+ runner Bill Parry. Hot off an outstanding ski season Bill out sprinted Jonathan Graham to grab third place. Perennial favorite Tamara Goeppel, fighting a bad cold, ran 19:27 to finish 15th overall and crossed the line as the first female finisher. Carrie Gabb, the second woman to cross the line, was only 12 seconds back and 17th overall. For the top 20 times click here.
March 11, 1999 Napa Valley Marathon Sue MacKinnon Dunn, always up for a new adventure and challenge took on the Napa Valley Marathon on March 7th and ran a very credible early early season 4:42:55. Way ta'go Sue! For complete results check out this link: http://www.napa-marathon.com/
February 26, 1999 First Half Rick Curial travelled to Vancouver and ran in the Pacific Road Runner's First Half Marathon. Despite having run outside only three times all winter Rick managed to finish 398th out of 1600 runners and 32nd out of 108 in his age group. His time of 1:39:32 certainly points to a good season ahead for Rick!
January 25, 1999 San Diego Marathon Two local runners and one former Yukoner travelled to sunny California and ran in the San Diego marathon this past week end. Given our winter and the difficulty all of us have in staying motivated their performances were nothing short of spectacular. Ken Sylvestre running in the 40-44 age group finished 372 overall and 66th in his grouping in an excellent time of 3:41:36. Rob McWilliam competing in the 45-49 age group was 366th overall and 37th in his age group in a time of 3:40:49. It was former Yukoner, but still a regular at the annual Klondike Road Relay, Janet Green, competing in the 45-49 age group who was 32nd overall out all women and a sensational 2nd in a time of 3:30:10. Over 5000 thousand runners took in this event. |
