A CHECKLIST OF YUKON BIRDS: Updated October 2000. Compiled by: Cameron D. Eckert, Helmut Grunberg, Greg Kubica, Lee Kubica, and Pam Sinclair. Funded by the Yukon Birdathon. Copyright October 2000 Yukon Bird Club. INTRODUCTION The Yukon is a land of stunning scenery, diverse ecosystems and truly remarkable wilderness. Here birdwatchers and other naturalists can experience the unique nature of northern birds while exploring a very different natural world. This checklist summarizes the occurrence and breeding status of 282 species which have been documented in the Yukon. Breeding has been confirmed for 187 species. Distribution codes indicate species which are only casually found outside a limited range in the Yukon. Frequency codes indicate species which are rare, casual or accidental. Forty-two species which occur annually in winter are indicated. Species names and taxonomic order follow the A.O.U. checklist (1998) and its supplements. DISTRIBUTION CODES N North Coast: Includes the northern foothills of the British and Richardson Mountains, the Coastal Plain and the Beaufort Sea. S South: South of 63 degrees N (includes Pelly Crossing but not Stewart Crossing). SE Southeast: Southern Yukon east of 131 degrees W (Swift River), lower case (se) for species restricted to the La Biche and Beaver Rivers in the extreme southeast Yukon. FREQUENCY and BREEDING CODES r Rare: reported annually in very low numbers. ca Casual: at least two records but not seen every year. ac Accidental: recorded only once. w Winter: observed annually in winter (Dec. 1 - Feb. 28). * Confirmed Breeding: Observations of an active nest or dependent, flightless young. DOCUMENTING BIRD SIGHTINGS Contribute to our knowledge of the Territory's bird life by sending written or photo documentation of rare, casual, or accidental species or those not on the checklist, and
