What we do
Yukon Learn believes every individual has a right to learn the skills needed to participate fully in society.
For this reason, we offer free tutoring year-round to help adults improve their reading, writing, and math skills. We try to match a learner with a volunteer tutor who has similar interests and available time. The two of them meet for up to three hours a week at a place and time that is handy for both.
We also help new Canadians learn to speak English.
Apart from reading and writing, tutors can assist adults with such skills as spelling, keyboarding, banking, resume writing, applying for a job, and taking the Yukon driver test.
As well, special projects can be developed with businesses that are willing to share in promoting the literacy skills of their employees.
Yukon Learn offers free tutor training twice yearly in Whitehorse and as required in outlying Yukon communities. Feel free to call us for further information about these and other programs.
What we have done
Yukon Learn has been working to promote the cause of literacy in the Yukon for over 10 years. In that time we have:
- provided tutoring for our learners
- built up a collection of textbooks, workbooks, supplemental reading books, videos, and audio tapes designed to help adults upgrade their skills
- developed a variety of materials that are culturally relevant, learner-centred, and job-specific. These include:
- an easy-to-read driver's manual and workbook
- an air brake manual
- an introductory manual on land surveying
- a communication handbook
- a book on traditional hunting and cooking by the Selkirk First Nation
- a collection of learner stories
- helped several Yukon communities and First Nations set up and maintain their own community-based projects
- developed special projects, with the assistance of the National Literacy Secretariat, to conduct research, needs assessments, and workshops.
