Since 1981, pioneer Yukoner Gus Karpes has written a number of guidebooks on the rivers in Southern Yukon, full of information accumulated through more than 25 years of experience as river guide, camp cook, naturalist and Yukon historian. In addition to describing the natural features of the river routes, the books also contain a wealth of historical information about the country you are travelling through, highlighted with photographs both new and old.
Gus provides the reader with a number of wilderness travelling tips, how-to's, do's and do-not's invaluable in the planning of a trip. He is a member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada and a member of the Yukon Order of Pioneers. Gus and his wife Irene live at Lake Laberge.
As a bonus, there are a number of short stories and personal anecdotes scattered throughout the books, which make great campfire entertainment.
Since 1918, the Mount Laurier Valley and the Livingstone winter trail to Lake Laberge has guarded the secret of Peter Cranston’s brutal murder and the whereabouts of a fortune in gold nuggets that he wrested from the Livingstone goldfields. More than 40 years later, a chance encounter with the only witness to the murder leads Sam Jeager on a quest into the Yukon wilderness to find Cranston’s cache of raw gold. The Yukon does not give up its treasure easily and to make matters worse, he has to deal with a ruthless thief who is determined to beat him to the prize. His first Yukon novel! Gus writes about his favorite subjects, Lake Laberge, the Livingstone Valley and the Yukon Wilderness that has been his home for many years. First edition - first printing - signed by author. Listen to an interview with Gus Karpes on CBC Radio about the book.
